Leaf springs

Post by Chisler »

Evening all
I’m planning on replacing the offside rear leaf spring on my 1983 88” tomorrow
My question- is it necessary to raise both rear wheels and put stands underneath the chassis or can I just raise the offside rear onto a stand and proceed with the dismantling.?
Your advice would be most appreciated.

Just done completed the fitting of replacement rear offside leaf spring on my 88” series 3
I was going to do it a couple of weeks ago but the weather here had been good, doing it outside.
Whilst I waited for a good day I’ve been spraying all the associated nuts and bolts with Plusgas .
I jacked up the rear end and put on axle stands and blocked up the rear cross member , belts and bracers. All nuts and bolts undid a treat and new spring fitted. I’m leaving it now over night for the spring to settle ready for torquing up the nuts tomorrow morning.
Really enjoyed doing it.
Next on the to do list is replacing hub bearings and seals. Going to chat with a local farmer and ask if I can park it up in the corner of one of his many barns, so can work on it when I like, fingers crossed

Did you smear copper grease over the spring eye and chassis bolts before assembly?
Years ago my mate fitted a set of parabolic springs on my Series 3 and smeared all the bolts with copper grease. When the suspension was completely rebuilt about 3 years ago, all the bolts came straight out and smeared with copper grease on reassembly.

Absolutely l did. Every nut and bolt I undo usually goes back together with Cooper grease applied.
