What have you done with your Series 3?
Re: What have you done with your Series 3?
That’s a good idea Neil , thanks for the heads up
Re: What have you done with your Series 3?
Last addition this weekend, I've fitted a reversing light!
Being (presumably) a demo vehicle from some local LR dealer, it has several (unused) switches on the dashboard.
When activating one of them, I noticed the noise of a relay toward the rear of the car.
I also noticed a couple of dangling cables, and a voltmeter quickly confirmed one of switches would give 12V on one of those!
So I ordered a revering light (the period correct square one, not the round one from later Defenders) and installed it this weekend.
Very happy with the result!

I went to Newbury today and bought the unicorn of spanners, a 1 inch Whitworth ring that fits the crankshaft pulley bolt on the 2.25 engine.

Probably a daft question, but an inch is an inch, what makes it special of a spanner, if I may ask?Neil Bymouth wrote: Sun Mar 29, 2026 2:09 pm I went to Newbury today and bought the unicorn of spanners, a 1 inch Whitworth ring that fits the crankshaft pulley bolt on the 2.25 engine.

Not daft at all ,the actual head size for a 1 inch whit bolt is over 1 and Half inches across flats.

Re: What have you done with your Series 3?
I measured it across the internal flats of the spanner.1 inch Whitworth is just under 2 inches diameter., probably approximately 1 15/16; in AF size and aprox 43 mm in metric. The other end is 1 1/8 Whit and that's 2 inches across.
Whitworth isvmeadured by the threaded part size, not the head as in AF. So 1 inch Whitworth is the threaded part being 1 inch in diameter as opposed to the head and that's why my 1 inch Whitworth spanner is so big.

You can get a switch for the gear lever so the reversing light automatically comes on when reverse is selected. I think it's the same switch as the plastic brake light switch on single brake circuit Series 3's.o4dn wrote: Sun Mar 29, 2026 12:54 pm Last addition this weekend, I've fitted a reversing light!

Not really, I have fitted a slick shift last year, the turret is different from the original one on the S3 (same as the later ones for the R380).Neil Bymouth wrote: Sun Mar 29, 2026 9:25 pm You can get a switch for the gear lever so the reversing light automatically comes on when reverse is selected. But a switch on the dashboard works fine for me, also because I have a number of unused switches!

If this works hopefully there should be a photo of the 1 inch Whitworth spanner .
The socket and adapter is a 41mm suitable for the crankshaft pulley bolt of the 2.5 engines and the brake cleaner was a bargain.
Somehow I've got 2 photos.
