Mystery chassis number
Mystery chassis number
Hi everyone
Asking for a friend (yes, really!) whose IIA restoration project has revealed these numbers painted on the chassis.
262502
Does anyone have any idea what they might signify, please?
(I have a photo but can't seem to insert / attach it to this post)
thanks
Jim

Re: Mystery chassis number
Hi Jim,
A photo would be useful. That does look like the format for Land Rover Part number of perhaps the chassis...
Need to see a picture.

Thanks for the prompt response.
I think I've figured out how to attach the photo - can you see the attached?
Cheers

Re: Mystery chassis number
I've checked that as a part number and it doesn't exist. It's been stencilled so I wonder if there's a military connection.
I wouldn't belong to a club that would accept me as a member (Groucho Marx).
Re: Mystery chassis number
The white-painted number is almost certainly not a factory chassis or casting number, but an internal or post-factory marking. Numbers like this were commonly used as factory assembly/batch tracking codes, workshop or restoration job numbers, fleet inventory IDs, or galvanising/refurbishment identifiers added during later work. They were applied for logistics and record-keeping, not for vehicle identity, which is why they’re usually painted or stenciled rather than stamped into the metal.
